By Mark Durden – Lead Instructor, Certified Appraiser

I will never forget teaching my first class, Mastering Appraisals. I was nervous, even after watching Scott teach the same class several times, but it only took a little while for the nerves to settle and I was able to connect with the class. It quickly became apparent that the class was thirsty for information to help them understand the appraisal process and that I was the “expert” in their eyes. This is still true after teaching hundreds of classes.

Our classes, and now our workshops, are the best way for us to connect with realtors and answer their questions. To many, the appraisal process is mysterious, confusing, and inconsistent. So many realtors and homeowners have had a bad experience with an appraisal and in most cases, the bad experience can be helped with just a little communication.  So often, when realtors tell me their horror stories it ends with “the appraiser would not talk to me”. All they really want is a better understanding or an explanation about the process. While I wish this were not true, it creates opportunities for us.

In every class or workshop, there are always a few realtors who soak up the information we provide.  They seem to hang on every word and take copious notes and/or ask the most questions. These are the agents who contact me to help their clients with an appraisal. Our classes and workshops are the best and easiest way to market yourself and expand your business. Plus, you don’t have to teach to benefit from our classes or workshops. You can attend a class or workshop and just answer questions. The key is to make a connection and they will remember you.

Our classes and workshops are the best way for us to distinguish ourselves from other appraisers. Talking with realtors and then following up with great service will pay long term dividends. Scott has always said that the most important part of what we do is customer service, and that is so true. When I do a Consultation Appraisal, I always take the time to explain my rational in the reconciliation section but also in my communication with the realtor and homeowner. Even if an appraisal is less than what the homeowner or realtor thought it would be, as long as I take the time to have a conversation with them, they have a better understanding about the process. They may not like it, but they will understand and appreciate your efforts.

The Academy does an excellent job marketing, coordinating, and equipping us for our classes and workshops. They make our classes and workshops easy. So start teaching or attending our classes and workshops and reap the rewards.
